Every year, the German Academic Exchange Service, or commonly known as "Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst" (DAAD), provide to international students and researchers from all over the world an opportunity to experience and access the research and learning activities in different institutes in Germany, through different scholarship programs.

The various scholarship programs are designed to each students or researchers with interest in developing their international network and contacts, pay an importance on assuming global responsibility or contribute towards the development of their respective home country with expertise and networks. Different programs are offered for students in Bachelor, Masters, Doctoral and Postdoctoral levels.

What are the different program offered?

Students are free to choose which scholarship program amoung the available ones are suitable to them, including:

  • Study Scholarships - Master Studies for all Academic Disciplines: A program that allow students to pursue their Master Studies in Germany
  • Study Scholarships - Postgraduate Studies for Artistic Disciplines and Architecture: Master Studies in Germany in the fields of Fine Art, Design, Visual Communication, Film, Music, Performing Arts and Architecture
  • University Summer Courses in Germany for Foreign Students and Graduates: For those who are willing to take German language course in Germany
  • University Winter Courses in Germany for Foreign Students and Graduates: For those who are willing to take German language course in Germany
  • Research Grants - One-Year Grants for Doctoral Candidates: Researching in Germany as part of a doctoral study programme in the home country
  • Research Grants – Short-Term Grants: Short research projects in Germany
  • Research Grants – Doctoral Programmes in Germany: Completing a doctorate at a German university
  • Research Grants – Bi-nationally Supervised Doctoral Degrees / Cotutelle: Completing a bi-national doctorate
  • Research Stays for University Academics and Scientists: Short research stays in Germany
  • Study Visits for Academics – Artists and Architects: Short study visits in Germany for university teachers from the disciplines Fine Art, Design, Visual Communication and Film, Music, Performing Arts and Architecture
  • Bilateral Exchange of Academics: Short research stays in Germany on the basis of bilateral cultural agreements

Scholarship Durations:

Depending on the choosen scholarship program, the study duration can take from 1 month to a Maximum of 4 years

Scholarship Benefits

  • Monthly stipend from 861 up to 2,150 euros depending on the choosen scholarship program
  • Payments towards insurance cover
  • Annual study allowance
  • Travel allowance
  • Additionally, under certain circumstances:
    • Monthly rent subsidy
    • Monthly allowance for accompanying members of family
    • If applicable, allowance for additional needs in case of disability/ chronic illness
    • Preparatory language course

DAAD scholarship: How to apply in five steps

  1. Applicants should read all informations first and get an overview on the program that is suitable for them.
  2. After that, applicant may seek for advice from their local DAAD office (www.daad.de/adressen) or online through the DAAD Info-Center (www.daad.de/contactform)
  3. The third step consist of finding out about the programmes on offer. The informations about language courses and study programmes at German universities or research institutes can be found at www.daad.de/deutschland. Information about study programmes is also available at www.study-in-germany.de and www.myguide.de; to find out about doctoral programmes and research opportunities, go to www.research-in-germany.org.
  4. Before the last step, applicants should put together their application documents at www.fundingguide.de: If applicants have questions about documents or the application procedure, they may take a look at the FAQs: www.daad.de/faq-en
  5. Lastly, applicants should submit online application directly to www.funding-guide.de. The progress of application can be checked and notified at any time the DAAD portal
