UTokyo Amgen Scholars Program in Japan 2023

The UTokyo Amgen Scholars Program 2023 in Japan is now accepting applications. The University of Tokyo wishes to assist undergraduate students from various countries who wish to pursue a career in biology or related sciences and wish to continue their graduate studies in the primary and translational sciences. International students will be able to gain research knowledge and skills. Through collaborative ventures, the students are also likely to broaden their global network. Undergraduate students can participate in scientific research projects at world-class institutions through the Amgen Scholars Program. The Amgen Scholars Program provides motivated and talented undergraduate students from around the world with the opportunity to learn scientific research at one of Asia's and the world's top higher education institutions.

The UTokyo Amgen Scholars Program gives students valuable hands-on research experience in graduate schools and at the University of Tokyo's research institute. Amgen Scholars was founded in the United States in 2006, in Europe in 2008, and in Japan in 2015 at Tokyo and Kyoto Universities. The fully-funded research internship conducts scientific research projects at numerous world-class institutions.

The UTokyo Amgen Scholars program will take place in Japan and Singapore from June 5 to August 5, 2023. The goal of this fully funded research internship is to provide young students with short-term biomedical research experiences in the primary and translational sciences under the supervision of various faculty members. Participants will also gain international networking skills and expertise in a variety of fields.

The Amgen Scholars Program at the University of Tokyo provides students with an excellent opportunity to complete their summer internship in Japan. Participants will be able to explore and see the door open to their future careers. Faculty from the University of Tokyo Amgen Scholars Program will meet with students ahead of time to develop a clear research plan before they arrive in Japan. This allows students and labs to properly prepare their research topics and methods. When the students arrive, they will be closely supervised by full-time tenured faculty members and will work in the lab with other graduate students.

The lab experience will provide students with the opportunity to learn about Japan, its people, and its language. Students will also learn about Japanese culture and language. This program aims to give students cutting-edge research experience as well as unforgettable memories of Japan. It will motivate them to become better researchers and people with a strong grasp of global values.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Applicants must be undergraduate students.
  • They must have completed a minimum first year of undergraduate study when the summer program begins.
  • Students who are graduating after the summer program begins are eligible.
  • They must have a strong record of academic performance.
  • Furthermore, students must be proficient in English, they must demonstrate a minimum TOEFL (iBT) score of 72, or IELTS overall band score of 5.5, Cambridge English FCE, TOEIC L&R score of 785, or TOEIC S&W score of 310, if not a native English speaker or English is not their first language.
  • They must have an interest in pursuing a PhD.
  • Devote their efforts to participate in the Amgen Scholars Program.
  • Scholars cannot take courses or hold a job throughout the program.
  • All participants must attend the program for its entire duration.
